Real-time Streamflow Data in Chile
For many rivers and creeks in Chile real-time streamflow satellite data is available from the Ministerio de Obras Públicas - Gobierno de Chile. (Public Works Ministry of the Government of Chile) If you are not familiar with Spanish it may take some time to learn how to navigate the MOPs website but it will be well worth your time.
Open the following page in a new browser window and follow the directions below:
The MOPs Hydrographic Section offers three months worth of streamflow and precipitation data available free to the public. To access archived records further back than three months you must be a registered user. This is the MOPs home page: MOP
Procedure to get Real-time Streamflow Data:
A] First you will need to see find the correct “Reporting Station” for the river you want to paddle. You have two possible options. The first is to directly select the reporting station you want data from. If you don’t know the station you can geographically locate it using the map functions. Go directly to the bottom of the page:
- Mapa de selección de región
- This choice allows you to visually select the region of Chile you are interested in.
- Mapa de selección de estaciones
- This choice allows you to visually select the reporting station from a map of the region. Select from the dropdown menu on the top-left.
- Selección directa de estación
- This option allows you to directly select the reporting station by name.
B] Once you are at the correct reporting station select the following options to get the most recent real-time streamflow information.
- Select “Caudal (m3/seg)”. This will give you the flow-rate in cubic meters per second.
- Skip the Gráficos section unless you want data in Chart Format over a period of time.
- Select “1 dia” in the “Periodo” section. (1 day) You can leave the start date (fecha inicial) alone unless you want to see data from more days.
- Select “Valores Instantáneos” in the “Tipo” section. (Instantaneous Values)
Hit the “ver” (go) button next to: “Informe y copia a archive” (Report and copy to file.)
C] You will now see all of the data recorded by that reporting station for the day you selected. Note that all of the data is in cubic meters per second, not cubic feet per second.
Conversion of CMS to CFS
To convert cubic meters per second (cms) to cubic feet per second (cfs) use the following chart(s), or do it yourself by multiply the cms value by 35.31. A link to a handy online converter can be found here: Convert CMS to CFS
CMS to CFS Conversion Equation:
(cms value ) x (35.31 multiplier) = (cfs value)
CMS to CFS Conversion Table:
- 10 cms = 353 cfs
- 25 cms = 883 cfs
- 50 cms = 1770 cfs
- 75 cms = 2650 cfs
- 100 cms = 3530 cfs
- 150 cms = 5300 cfs
- 200 cms = 7060 cfs
- 250 cms = 8830 cfs
- 300 cms = 10600 cfs
- 350 cms = 12400 cfs
- 400 cms = 14100 cfs
- 450 cms = 15900 cfs
- 500 cms = 17700 cfs
- 600 cms = 21200 cfs
- 700 cms = 24700 cfs
- 800 cms = 28300 cfs
- 900 cms = 31800 cfs
- 1000 cms = 35300 cfs
CFS to CMS Conversion Equation:
(cfs value ) x (0.02832 multiplier) = (csm value)
CFS to CMS Conversion Table:
- 500 cfs = 14.2 cms
- 1000 cfs = 28.3 cms
- 2000 cfs = 56.6 cms
- 3000 cfs = 85 cms
- 4000 cfs = 113 cms

- 7000 cfs = 198 cms
- 8000 cfs = 227 cms
- 9000 cfs = 255 cms
- 10000 cfs = 283 cms
- 15000 cfs = 425 cms
- 20000 cfs = 566 cms
